There was a knock on my office door. When I looked up, there was a middle-aged woman standing in the doorway. She was full of sweat, beat read, and breathing hard.
Her name was Ashley.
She asked to sit down, and then she started telling me what was going on.
Apparently, Ashley had been trying to lose weight for over 6 years. But every time she’d try a new diet or program, she’d only lose 3-5 pounds. Then, she’d get stuck… gain it back… and then gain more weight.
Over the last 6 years, she’d put on 30 pounds.
As Ashley spoke, her lips started to quiver… and she broke down crying.
She was tired, confused, frustrated, and ready to give up. She hated her body. She hated how she looked.
I told her I could help her – and she decided to sign up with me. She was willing to try anything.
I figured it would be easy to get the weight off Ashley. But I was dead wrong. And things went horrible.
After several weeks, she hadn’t lost any weight. And we tried everything:
Nothing was working.
I was so discouraged. I even considered quitting as a trainer. (This was back in 2009, and I was still a relatively new trainer at the time.)
But I KNEW there had to be a way to help her… so I made Ashley a deal:
I would work with her for free – until we figured it out and she lost weight.
I immediately started doing research to find out what was going on. And, after about two weeks, I stumbled onto the answer.
It turns out that when you diet (or over-exercise), you actually wreck your body. And you PREVENT your own body from losing body-fat.
This is called being in a “catabolic state”. And it causes something called Repressed Metabolic Syndrome.
In essence, your body perceives that it’s under attack – and that it needs to survive. So it goes into a “lockdown mode” – and holds on to everything you eat.
And this is EXACTLY what had happened to Ashley: She had dieted for so long, and stopped losing weight.
Then, she started exercising more and more to try to burn more calories.
As a result, she completely wrecked her body.
The good news is… this is all reversible. And that’s what I discovered through my research.
You can switch your body over from a catabolic state to the “Thermogenic State” – where it starts burning fat all the time.
As soon as I saw Ashley, I explained what was happening to her body – and that she would need to work out less and eat more.
Of course, Ashley looked at me like I was crazy.
“No way!” She said. “I’ll gain weight if I do that!”
It took about an hour, but I convinced her to try it for at least 2 weeks.
She went from exercising 60-90 minutes a day… down to 30 minutes a day. And she went from eating 3 meals a day… to eating 5 meals a day (almost double).
After 2 weeks, she had lost 2.75 pounds. But she wasn’t excited. (Remember, she would always lose 3-5 pounds, then get stuck… and then gain it back.)
But this time it was different…
After 12 weeks, Ashley had lost 37 pounds of body-fat.
She looked at me in a state of confusion. How could this have possibly worked?
What Ashley and I had done was give her the EXACT right amount of exercise. And then combined the right style of eating for her body. And it literally forced her body to start burning fat.
But there was something else:
If she would cheat before – all of her progress would be undone. But now, she could cheat and – because her body was burning fat so quickly – she’d only gain about a pound (at most). And she’d lose it the next day – and be right back on track.
I was so excited, that I started using this method with ALL my other clients. And they started losing weight faster than they ever had before.
It was like magic.
And something else happened:
Because my clients were eating delicious foods all day long… they found it easy to maintain their results.
They could go out to eat without blowing their progress. They could travel or go on vacation. They could go to concerts or other events. Because they had all discovered how to eat without wrecking their progress.
In fact, here are just a few things that happen when you put your body into the Thermogenic State:
Any other method causes your body to slow down and can cause Repressed Metabolic Syndrome.
In fact, numerous studies have proven that both low-carb diets and high-fat diets can cause something called “Diet-Induced Hypothyroidism.”
What this means is that – if you don’t eat enough carbs, or you eat too much fat – you can cause your thyroid to shut down. And then your body won’t be able to lose weight. Period.
Ashley had made all of these mistakes. And that’s why (after we made a few tweaks) she was able to lose 30 pounds in just 12 weeks – even though she had tried for over 6 years unsuccessfully.

These were the only 4 tweaks we made. And it caused Ashley to drop 30 pounds in a few months!
The sad truth is this:
